A Trip Down Memory Lane

Chloe enjoyed sitting on the back porch, it was such a beautiful day!!

Across the field, you can see Turtle and Betty Sue's house. I used to go home every Thursday afternoon and most of the time Turtle would be visiting my dad.

A weeping willow tree we gave my dad many years ago. It was only about 2 feet tall when we gave it to him.

The rosebush my grandmother gave to me.

The For Sale sign in the front yard :(

Three of my favorite men at my graduation in December 2004, when I received my Master's degree. Oh happy day!!

On Friday, Chloe and I went to visit the "Old Homeplace". My parents still have it up for sale. I really miss the tranquility and the atmosphere of the old house. You could hear the birds chirping and the crickets screeching as we sat on the back porch. A little hummingbird came right up to us. As I sat on the porch, I couldn't help but to think of all the wonderful memories of this house. My family lived in this house from the time I was about 12 years old until last year. It was such a good place to call home.

As I looked across the pasture, it made me think of all the changes that have occurred over the last two years. Seeing my aunt and uncle's house reminded me of my dear uncle Turtle. He was such a witty man. He died in November when I was pregnant with Chloe. I was so hoping she would have the opportunity to meet such a wonderful man. He was so witty. Once, when I was in the hospital, I did not want him to come and see me because I knew he would make me laugh and it hurt so badly to laugh. One of my fondest memories was scrubbing and washing TONS of pots and pans with Turtle at Taylor Christian camp. After washing several hours, Turtle said, "If you see anything left, just scrape it off with your fingernail." We were so tired of washing dishes. But he was doing one of the things he did best....serving the Lord.

Turtle was an elder at Crittenden Drive and he helped with the Senior Saints as well as benevolence, which made for lots of stories that he told best. As I think back about my uncle Turtle, one thing that I realize is that he was always there. In all the pictures of the major events in my life, Turtle was in almost every one. One more recent memory was the time that I was riding in the old blue truck with Turtle, I had recently broke up with one of my old boyfriends. Turtle told me that I would probably have many more heartaches, but that one day I would find someone that would never break my heart...... and he was right!!!

There is one other time that I remember Turtle vividly and that is when I am in my car turning left at a green light. He taught me to get "out in the middle" so that I could be sure to make the light. He reassured me that the other cars would stop when the light turned yellow or maybe even red!! Thanks Turtle.
